IRAC example intent
IRAC Case Brief Example
This fictional example shows the IRAC core without copying a casebook opinion. Use it to see how issue, rule, application, and conclusion fit together inside a class brief.
Short IRAC example
Case Name: Sample Student v. Library Issue: Whether a student breached a posted library rule by reserving a study room and not appearing within the required time. Rule: When a posted study-room policy requires arrival within a stated period, a reservation may be released if the student does not arrive during that period. Application: The student reserved the room for 2:00 p.m. but did not arrive until 2:25 p.m. The policy allowed release after 15 minutes. Because the student missed the stated arrival window, the library followed the posted rule when it released the room. Conclusion: The student likely did not keep the reservation under the posted policy.
Where facts and holding go
IRAC is the analytical core. For class preparation, add facts before the issue and add holding, reasoning, and professor notes after the conclusion if your course expects them.
